"I came to The First Cup not quite knowing what to expect. I'd tried reading finance books before and found them written for people who already knew the subject. This was completely different — the facilitator sat with us, used plain words, and didn't rush once. I left the three sessions feeling like I understood something I'd found confusing for years."

"A Longer Conversation covered things I genuinely didn't know — particularly around fixed deposits and how the Social Security Fund works for people my age. The pace was very manageable. I sometimes needed things repeated, and nobody made me feel awkward about it. My one wish is that there were more sessions — I could have gone another two or three weeks."
A Longer Conversation
Margaret L.
British expat, Bangkok · May 2025
"As a long-term expat, I'd always felt uncertain about the Thai financial system and what it meant for my retirement here. The Long Afternoon Programme answered questions I hadn't even known how to phrase properly. It was ten weeks well spent. The facilitator was clear about what the course could and couldn't cover, which I appreciated."

"I brought my husband to The First Cup because I thought it might suit us both. It did. We walked out of the three sessions having had a conversation about our finances that we'd honestly been putting off for years. The course created a kind of gentle structure for that — it didn't feel like a class, it felt like a useful conversation we finally sat down to have."

"A Longer Conversation was solid. The content on Thai savings funds was particularly clear — I'd read things online that contradicted each other and never quite trusted that I'd understood the situation correctly. Having a facilitator work through it with examples made the difference. The room was comfortable and the group was about the right size."
A Longer Conversation
Nattaya T.
Bangkok, Thailand · March 2025
"I finished The Long Afternoon Programme in February. It was longer than I'd expected — ten weeks felt like a commitment — but by the end I was glad it was that length. The topics about healthcare costs and what to think about in your late fifties were things I hadn't found discussed anywhere in plain language. The personal planning folder is still on my desk."

Participant Journeys
A closer look at three participants' experiences
The Challenge
Sarawut, 54, had worked in the civil service for many years. He was approaching retirement but had never properly understood how the Government Pension Fund worked or whether his savings were in the right place. He described himself as "nervous about looking too closely" at his finances.
What He Did
Sarawut completed The Long Afternoon Programme over ten weeks. In his own words, the first few sessions were mainly about listening — taking in information he'd never had explained clearly. By week five, he was bringing his own questions and staying after sessions to talk through particular points.
Where He Is Now
He left with a completed personal planning folder and, for the first time, a written picture of where his finances stood. He subsequently met with a licensed financial adviser — a step he felt able to take because he now knew which questions to ask. "I went in not sure I wanted to know. I came out glad that I did."
The Challenge
Karen, 48, had moved to Bangkok from New Zealand eight years ago. She'd kept saving in the same way she'd always done, but wasn't sure whether her approach made sense in the Thai context. She also had questions about healthcare planning that she hadn't known where to take.
What She Did
Karen joined A Longer Conversation, which she described as "much more conversational than any course I'd done before." She particularly valued the sessions on Thai fixed deposits and the midway check-in, which gave her a chance to discuss her particular situation with the facilitator directly.
Where She Is Now
Karen has since enrolled in The Long Afternoon Programme, which she's due to complete this year. She described the six-week course as "the kind of thing I wish I'd done when I first arrived in Thailand." She now feels comfortable discussing her finances with Thai banking staff, which had previously been a source of some frustration.
